Work-in-Progress (WIP) Papers

Work-in-Progress papers enable authors to share late-breaking results with the research community. The emphasis of WIP papers is on the novelty of the work, not completeness.

Preparing your Submission

Program Abstract

At submission, an abstract (limited to 750 characters or ~100 words) is also required. Similar to technical papers, this abstract is for use in the conference program. Note that the final abstract within the paper itself (pdf manuscript file) is allowed to exceed 750 characters.

Author Names and Affiliations

HS2026 is using a double-blind review process, which means that reviewers will not know any information about the authors who wrote the papers they are reviewing. The HS Editorial Board chose this reviewing model based on best practices to reduce reviewer bias and increase fairness in the review process. Therefore, authors must not include their names, affiliations, or other identifying information anywhere in the version of the paper they submit for review.

To comply with page length requirements, authors should use placeholder text for the author list and affiliations. When referencing prior work by the authors, take particular care to write in the third person (e.g., “Lastname et al.”), as is standard for citing external sources, and include full citations. Avoid using the first person (e.g., “we,” “I,” “our”) and refrain from disclosing institutional or geographic information within the manuscript text. All images and videos must be anonymized for initial submission by removing or obscuring identifiable elements such as faces, institutional logos, and other distinguishing features. Funding details and acknowledgments should also be anonymized for initial submission and included in full only after acceptance. Finally, ensure that all identifiable metadata is removed from the submitted PDF using Adobe Acrobat or other suitable editing tools.

Authors must confirm compliance with this double-blind policy during submission, and submitted papers will be checked for proper anonymization before review. Papers that have not been properly anonymized may be desk-rejected, or their authors may be required to make corrections before the submission can be sent out for review. Questions and comments about this double-blind review process should be addressed to wip@hapticssymposium.org or editors@hapticssymposium.org .

Paper Format

WIP papers should be prepared according to the formatting instructions available here .

For authors’ convenience, the templates for technical papers can be downloaded in Word or Latex format. Note that only the US Letter template will be accepted, not the A4 template.

Paper Length

WIP papers should be maximum 2 pages including references. There will be no option to purchase additional pages.

Optional Supplemental Video

Submission of a video is optional but encouraged to help readers understand the WIP paper. Uploaded videos will be reviewed along with the paper. Videos associated with accepted WIP papers will be included in the electronically distributed conference proceedings and may be used to promote the conference.

Supplemental Videos Guidelines

Representative Image

Representative images provide symposium attendees with a chance to browse papers in advance. The WIP representative image should focus on the main ideas or results of the work. The purpose is to encourage the audience to visit the WIP poster, not to summarize the paper contents.

Accepted WIP abstracts will be published in the conference digest along with a representative image. Uploaded images will be reviewed along with the paper. The image should be 500 x 500 pixels and 300 dpi in JPEG format.

Accessibility and Inclusion

Accessible submissions are essential for reviewers and are good practice. Authors are expected to follow the IEEE Haptics Symposium Guide to Inclusive and Accessible Submissions . If you have any questions or concerns about creating accessible submissions, please contact the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Chair at edi@hapticssymposium.org .

Mentorship Program

To provide additional mentoring to authors of Work-in-Progress papers, we created a system where student authors can sign up for mentors to come to their poster session and talk to them about their work and career.

If interested in participating in this program, authors should respond to the following questions in the submission form:

Submission Method

All WIP papers (including optional video) should be submitted using the Haptics Symposium ’26 paper submission portal in Precision Conference System (PCS) .

Under “Submissions”, please select:

Then click “Go” to make a new submission. You will be able to edit the form until the deadline.

Final Submission and Publication

The authors of accepted WIP Papers will be asked to prepare a final version of their paper, the 100-word abstract, and a final version of the optional video.

All accepted WIP papers will be included in the electronically distributed conference proceedings, but they will not be published in IEEE Xplore .

Authors retain the full copyright of WIP papers so that they can submit a more mature version of the paper at another time.

Presenting at the Conference

Work-in-Progress papers will be presented through a poster and short teaser presentation. More details to be released as the conference date nears.
